Fulling Mill Black Pennell Wet Fly is one of the most famous traditional trout flies ever created, first developed by H. Cholmondeley-Pennell in the late 1800s. It has stood the test of time thanks to its simplicity, effectiveness and ability to consistently tempt trout in both still and moving water.

This classic black pattern is particularly deadly when fished loch-style as part of a team of flies, where its subtle silhouette and natural movement make it an irresistible target for both rainbow and brown trout. Whether fishing Irish loughs, Scottish lochs or large stillwaters, the Black Pennell remains a go-to choice for experienced wet-fly anglers.

Fulling Mill ties this pattern using only premium Grade A hackles, ensuring excellent movement and durability in the water. The fly is built on the Fulling Mill Short Shank Special Hook (code 31510), which features a normal hook gape but a slightly shorter shank. This means the fly may appear one size smaller than stated while still offering excellent hooking performance.

Fished on floating or intermediate lines, the Black Pennell excels when pulled or allowed to drift naturally, making it a versatile pattern in a wide range of conditions. If you enjoy traditional wet-fly fishing and proven trout patterns, this is an essential fly for your box.
